RECRUITERS Heres How to Source New Business When Your Pipelines Dried Up Agency recruitment is full of really high highs and seriously  low lows. Consistency of workload is a sought-after luxury that very rarely eventuates; one minute you can be run off your feet, the next youre sat twiddling your thumbs wondering why no one in the whole world is hiring. Consultants  are constantly answering to monthly  and quarterly targets, that always forgiving of random quiet patches and stressful dry spells. In an ideal world, youd  have a constant flow of live jobs to work on, a network of quality candidates that continues to grow steadily each day, and multiple interviews happening each week. The placements would drop like dominos, one after the other, when theyre supposed to. Reality tells a different story though, and  sometimes the going gets really tough. Roles are cancelled after final interviews, candidates reject offers, businesses go on hiring freezes The list goes on. To top it all off, your bad luck snowballs into a huge mess right before the weekly sales meeting. John, how many live roles are you working on? None How many interviews have you got happening this week? None What is your pipeline looking like this month? What is a pipeline? When your pipeline  is hitting rock bottom,  you know its time  to exhaust every possible avenue for job leads. Where should you start? Reference checks When you need to find our whos hiring,  pick up the phone and reference check some of the candidates you are currently representing. Gain permission first from your candidate, and call the people they used to work for. Why? Because  these people  have hired in the past; your candidate is proof of that. Who knows, they might need your help filling a new hire? Even if they  arent currently growing their team, they might have a colleague who is. Candidate calls If youve got great relationships with  the candidates you are representing, or have done so in the past, give them a call to see if theyve heard of any leads. Ask them if they are being approached by any headhunters with specific roles (which they arent interested in applying for). Your candidates are living and breathing inside the industry you recruit for, they are often the ones who hear about open roles and might be able to point you in the right direction, to tell you which companies are hiring, and who you should be contacting. Social media ad chasing Its a tedious task, but searching the web looking for relevant ads can be a good place to start looking for new vacancies to work on, and new clients to attempt to develop business with. Use hashtags on Twitter and Facebook to search for companies who are recruiting in your industry, and search job boards to hone in on where the activity is online. Client calls Try calling old clients of yours, to check in on how things are going in their world, and whether you can help them with anything. They might have a colleague they know is recruiting someone in their team, or they might give you a heads up on a new position that will go out to agencies in the near future. If you give your clients a good service, they should be happy to help you out when you are in a time of need. Placement calls So youve placed a lot of candidates into their dream roles and while your clients put money in your pocket, your candidate got the service for free. The likelihood is that you are your placements favourite person, after all, you helped make their dreams come true. Why not give them a call, and ask if they know of any live vacancies you might be able to try get on your books? They will no doubt be well connected in your industry, and will most likely be super happy to help you out and point you in the right direction. Industry events Attend town halls or networking events relevant to the industry you recruit in. Actually meeting people face to face will give you the chance to strike up conversations with a load of potential candidates and clients. Youll be able to tell them that it seems to be rather quiet in the jobs market at the moment, and theyll tell you what they think. You should be able to ask them for a few leads, and share information that is useful to them, about the market in general and what their competitors are doing. We think about who we’re going to meet up with on the weekend.   What film will we watch when we get home? What kind of dinner do we want to cook? We plan our lives around the unpredictable future because we want to have things to look forward to. Unfortunately, it will inevitably cross our minds that we also need to be planning ahead for a couple of years and not just days. In fact, many people have already started Retirement Planning despite only being in their mid-20sâ€"now that’s dedication! However, starting young and preparing for the future is never a bad idea. Yes, it’s true that even the best-laid plans can go to waste, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth consideration in the first place. So who cares if your future plan isn’t playing out 100%? The point is that you need to get thinking because there are things, such as your health, that are irreversible. If you’re smoking and you’ve ever wanted to stop, then perhaps you need to get an early head start before it does permanent damage to your body. Marriage and Children Getting married, having a wedding and then raising children is the most common stereotype for the average person. In fact, some people have it ingrained in their minds and they want to get married as early as possible to start preparing for their retirement as soon as they can. They want to have children, they want their children to grow, and then they’ll kick their children out and let them fend for themselves once they’re old enough to work and pay rent. However, it’s becoming increasingly more acceptable to never get married and never have children. While passing on the bloodline is a huge deal to some families, other parents will support their children no matter what decision they make. Many people realize that there are very few advantages to getting married, and the prospect of raising a child could lead to financial problems that not every couple can stomach. Careers We’ve all been stuck in a boring job that we never wanted in the first place. We do it just for the money and we swear that we’ll leave at the first opportunity. Sadly, that opportunity never comes and several years later, we find ourselves sitting at the same job and cursing everything around us because we don’t want to take risks. Unfortunately, the reality is that it’s not easy to find a dream job. Opportunities don’t just come to youâ€"you need to go and find them. Housing You should consider what your preferred type of accommodation is because buying a house and taking out a mortgage is a long-term investment. Do you see yourself living in the same city for years to come, or do you prefer to move around? Your accommodation strategy will depend on how much you want to travel and where you want to work. For example, if you’ve landed a job at a secure company and can expect job security for many years to come, then there’s nothing wrong with buying a home now and preparing it for when you have a family. Are Office Cultures Doing Enough to Encourage Employees to Reach Health Goals Have you ever considered how much activity your employees are fitting in the day? Of course, nobody wants staff who are spending hours on end making cups of tea or having extended lunches but in the UK an adult spends an average of 9.5 hours a day sedentary. A new study by Perkbox Medical, of 2,850 people, found that 45% of Brits feel that they aren’t able to reach their fitness goal of 10,000 steps a day because they are ‘not able to walk a lot at work’. A further 40% stated that they ‘don’t have enough time’, further highlighting the issue of work/life balance. With 58% of Brits trying to reach the target of 10,000 steps a day and a huge 71% of Brits (whether attempting to hit this target or not) not reaching this amount of activity each day, it highlights that many Brits are living a highly sedentary lifestyle. This can contribute to a host of serious medical issues, including depression/anxiety, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, risk of stroke and coronary heart disease. The survey also revealed that 73% attempt to reach 10,000 steps a day to maintain mental health and reduce stress and 64% wish to improve fitness therefore, with 45% feeling that they aren’t able to reach these goals due to work, it leads to concern that workplaces aren’t placing their employees health as a priority. Workplace stress is a growing issue and regular exercise can have a positive impact on depression, anxiety and more. It relieves stress, improves memory, improves sleep and boosts overall mood all of which should be of importance within the workplace. Employees should feel that they are able to take regular short walks at work the NHS recommends breaking up long periods of sitting with shorter bouts of activity for just one to two minutes. To better help employees reach their goals, Perkbox recommends the following: Education surrounding the mental health benefits of walking Many might be unaware of the mental health benefits that walking can allow helping to educate everyone in the company of mental health benefits that a simple short walk can bring, could make a real impact on some lives. If possible, make it clear to employees that if anyone is feeling under any pressure or stress, they are able to step away from the desk and take a short walk to clear their mind and reap the health benefits. Introduce workplace step count competitions Who doesn’t get a bit competitive at the sound of a challenge? Setting up a friendly competition amongst colleagues, of who can reach 10,000 steps a day the most frequently over a certain period of time, with the winner receiving a small prize, helps to get everyone involved. A shared goal boosts motivation, and the whole office will be feeling the benefits of getting more exercise. Encourage walking lunches Many of us can’t resist staying at our desks to get a few extra emails out over lunch. However, eating lunch at your desk can decrease productivity and bring the ‘brain fog’ that many of us will be familiar with. Create a culture in the office that encourages everyone to leave their desks at lunch, even just for a short time the office should seem revitalized come the afternoon and productivity levels may even rise. Introduce standing desks Although not contributing to step count, standing desks reduce the effects of sitting for too long. Standing desks aim to reduce back pain and all the effects of a sedentary lifestyle having desks that can switch between sitting and standing gives the choice of both and means that standing doesnt feel like a chore. Talking in real life? Surely not Technology makes it so easy to communicate with colleagues without even moving. And whilst we all love slack and email, sometimes it can mean we don’t move for hours as its so easy to chat with everyone in the room without getting up. Walking over to talk to a colleague gives an opportunity to stretch legs and can often mean that ideas and thoughts are more quickly communicated encourage an open communication culture and ensure that everyone in the office gets up to talk to others throughout the day. Woman are Still Underrepresented in UK Business [Infographic] Women are making great strides in the workplace and as business leaders.   Women have been proven to have more profitable businesses than men too.   But theyre not on par with men yet in terms of percentage of top jobs or as business founders. So what are the statistics?   Check out this article and infographic  previously published on Money Pod. Woman are still under-represented in the UK in terms of entrepreneurship and business. Although the gap between the number of male and female entrepreneurs may be closing, it still exists. In the UK the so called “Enterprise Gap”, the difference in the number of men and woman owning companies, has significantly decreased in the last decade, but there is still work to be done. There are 5.5m SMEs (small to medium-sized enterprises) operating in the UK today, with only 20% led by woman â€" that’s 1.14m in total. The UK has not only seen an increase in female entrepreneurs in recent years, but also in woman occupying directorial roles. In 2017, 28% of FTSE 100 directorships were occupied by woman. This exceeds a target set in a 2011 governmental report that said there should be a minimum of 25% female representation on boards. Looking at the differences across sectors of woman representation on the boards of FSTE 100 companies, there has been substantial changes in the past 10 years. In 2007, there was no women on the boards of companies in the construction sector, and only 4% in manufacturing. Both sectors or now operating at or above the government’s target of 25%, with representation of 29% and 25%. There are now 0 all-male boards in the FTSE 100, down from 21 in 2011. In fact, 46 companies have now reached 30% representation of woman in the boardroom. The trend is also being matched in the FTSE 250, in which 62 companies as of October 2017 had reached 30% representation of woman, and only 9 all-male boards remain, down from 131 in 2010. Overall, there is a significant variation by region when it comes to the percentage of woman who are directors in businesses. Wales and the North of England are the most gender-equal parts of the UK, at least in terms of having a low share of businesses with no female representation on boards and high rates of having more than one. Not only has female directorship considerably increased, but more woman are starting their own business. There were 648,000 more businesses owned by woman in 2016 than in 2000. That’s a significant 72% increase in 16 years. During the same time, male self-employment also increased, from 2.357m businesses in 2000, to 3.221m businesses in 2016. London and the South East are the leading hubs of female start-ups, with female entrepreneurs generating an extra 18,000 jobs in the Capital in 2015. This meant that there was an increased economic contribution of £790m from female led start-ups in London alone. The percentage of woman business owners compared to total business ownership changes drastically from country to country. Woman business ownership is not always correlated to the wealth and level of development of an economy. In the UK, 25.8% of total business owners are woman.

Salary Information.  Salary.com  is user-friendly and offers free reports with just two data points a job title and zip code. Fee-based premium reports are available, but their free reportsare quite substantial.           Aggregated Job Search Listings.  LinkUp.com  compiles job postings from across the web offers the ability to save searches.  Indeed.com  is another aggregator.   These sites are a huge time saver in concept alone, but take it up a notch by  setting up automated job search agents for your target jobs.                 Interview Preparation Made Easy.  QuintCareers.com  has a packed section on interview questions, including a database of more than 150 questions and sample responses. The site also includes traditional, off the wall, and situational questions as well as 14 practice interview scenarios.      Off Ramps,  On Ramps, and More.  Many of todays stay at home parents are trying to integrate paid employment into their schedule.  HybridMom.com  is a fantastic resource for stay at home moms (or dads) who are blending stay at home parenting with  entrepreneurial career opportunities. The site was named one of the top 100 websites for women for 2010 by ForbesWoman  and  also happens to be a personal favorite!
